Ripudaman Singh Malik, a Sikh leader living in Canada, has been shot dead. His name had cropped up in the 1985 Air India bombings. However, later in the year 2005, Ripudaman was acquitted by the court in this case. Malik was shot and killed while on his way to work in Vancouver. On Friday morning, around 9.30 am, there was a sound of firing, then a bullet hit him and he died on the spot. Ripudaman Singh was on the Indian Black List for almost a decade. He was given a single entry visa in the year 2020 and recently a multiple visa in 2022. Ripudaman had also recently visited Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi and Maharashtra in the month of May.
In 1985, 331 people were killed in the Air India bombing incident. Ripudaman Singh Malik, a Canadian-based Sikh leader, was also an accused in the case but was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Ripudaman Singh had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January this year and expressed his gratitude for the steps taken by his government for the Sikh community. Malik was one of the persons accused of playing a key role in the bombing of Air India Flight 182 Kanishk. On 23 June 1985, a bomb exploded on Air India flight 182 "Kanishq" from Canada off the coast of Ireland, killing 329 passengers.
