Mallikarjun Kharge joins Congress contest, to file nomination papers today
Mallikarjun Kharge to contest Congress president poll, Digvijaya Singh decides to withdraw from the race
Gandhi's family's trusted friend Mallikarjun Kharge made a wild card entry on the last day of nomination for the Congress President's election. There was a meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi till late Thursday night, after which Kharge was called at 10 Janpath on Friday morning.
Due to the backdoor support of the Gandhi family, Kharge is believed to be the Congress President. If all goes well, Kharge, who started his career with the labor movement, can take over the reins of the country's oldest party, the Congress. If this happens, Kharge will become the second Dalit president after Babu Jagjivan Ram. Jagjivan Ram was the President of Congress from 1970-71.
On this, Congress leader Digvijay Singh said, "Kharge Ji is my senior. I went to his residence yesterday & told him that I won't file my nomination if he's filing (for #CongressPresident). He said that he won't be filing. Afterward, I got to know via the press that he is a candidate." Digvijay Singh has now withdrawn his application.
