Magical Swedish Eco-Retreat Couple Vanishes Amid 158 Barrels of Human Waste & Unpaid Taxes Scandal
A Danish couple fled to Guatemala after leaving 158 barrels of human waste at their Swedish forest resort.
As per a report with The Guardian, a Danish couple who gained world fame for making a "forest retreat" in Sweden are now having an ugly surprise at the end of their run for the tax authorities.
Flemming Hansen and Meet Helbæk had built a resort after having "felt the call of the wild" in organizing a rooftop restaurant in Copenhagen. More than a hundred and fifty-eight human waste barrels were deserted in the resort. They were tracked down to Guatemala.

This resort, Stedsans, consisted of 16 wooden cottages nestled in nature, which frequently attracted influencers describing such "magical" and "enchanting luxury."
Left behind animals, poop
But after leaving many stubborn animals and 158 barrels of human excrement, the couple disappeared from that resort few months ago, local newspapers concluded in their investigation.
Severe weather conditions resulted in the deaths of many animals left overnight by the couple, and the resort's wastewater had run into the forest. It was declared bankrupt in March.
According to Danish authorities, there was debt in millions of kroner with tax. Shortly after they moved to Sweden in 2016, they built a Stedsans in Sweden but started accumulating debt with Swedish tax authorities. Reportedly, it was more than 6m SEK (£470,000).
‘Environmental crime’
They disappeared and started a new hotel business in Guatemala. “We came very far with Stedsans, but we also had to realise on the way that being soul-driven entrepreneurs on a mission in a country where taxes are some of the highest in the world and bureaucracy is relentless, it is an impossible task," they said in a message posted on their website.
The Swedish authorities have called their actions are "environmental crime."
Hansen described Swedish tax authorities as a "narcissistic entity" and claimed he was now "sentenced to a life in poverty."
