Lovlina’s Tokyo Olympic Journey Ends With A Bronze Medal
The 23-year-old Assam girl has set her sights on gold, but World Champion and Number one ranked Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli proved too good for her in the Semi Final of Women’s Boxing competition in the Tokyo Olympics.
New Delhi: Daring Indian Boxer Lovlina Borgohain’s has assured herself of a Bronze medal by making it to the Semi Finals in the welterweight and the 23-year-old Assam girl has set her sights on gold, but on Wednesday, World Champion and Number one ranked Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli proved too good for her in the Semi Final of Women’s Boxing competition in Tokyo Olympics. Busenaz Surmeneli defeated Lovlina through a unanimous decision of 5-0. It is confirmed that Lovlina will come back home with a Bronze medal.
So far, this is India's third medal in Tokyo Olympics. All three medals were won by women athletes. Mirabai Chanu has won a Silver medal in Weightlifting and PV Sindhu got a Bronze medal in Badminton.
In Boxing, The two losing Semi-Finalists get Bronze medals. The Assam boxer outpunched Nadine Apetz (Germany) and Chen Nien-chin (Chinese Taipei) on her way to the last four. A win in the Semi Final for Lovlina would have made her the most successful Indian boxer at the Olympics.
She has become the first from Assam to win an Olympic medal, the third boxer of the country, and the second women boxer to win an Olympic medal. Indian Boxers Vijender Singh and MC Mary Kom have also won Bronze medals in previous Olympics.
Indians had high hopes for Lovlina, they were praying and lighting lamps for her victory. Yesterday, a special program was organized at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. Candles were lit to pray for the young Indian Boxer, by lighting a candle in front of the statue of Radha Govinda Baruah. Assam CM Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma attended this special ceremony to pray for Lovlina Borgohain a day ahead of her semi-final bout and had appealed to everyone to light a lamp on Wednesday morning also.
