Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed disappointment and annoyance on the fact that history books don’t give too much importance and coverage to martyrs of the Chauri Chaura incident that took place during the Indian Independence struggle.
The incident had taken place on February 4, 1922, when a large group of people protesting against British ruled had clashed with Police in Chauri Chaura village in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
The protestors had participated in the non-cooperation movement which turned violent and led to the killing of 22 policemen. Mahatma Gandhi had to withdraw his non-cooperation movement due to violence.
PM Modi inaugurated through video conference ‘Chauri Chaura’ Centenary Celebrations at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
PM Modi said that his government is making all efforts to highlight the efforts of lesser-known freedom fighters and martyrs who also played a vital role in the freedom movement like many other popular leaders.
Holding that Chauri Chaura was the self-motivated struggle of common people, PM Modi said, “Even if revolutionaries of this struggle were not given due prominence in the pages of history, their blood is mingled with the soil of this nation.”
Remembered the efforts of leaders like Baba Raghavdas and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya who saved about 150 freedom fighters from hanging, PM Modi said, “It is rare to find a single episode in the freedom struggle where 19 freedom fighters were hanged for one event.”
PM Modi praised Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, and the state government for organizing the event.
