According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 100 kilometers from the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province. The earthquake occurred at 1.30 pm local time. Five people died in Saih Khosho village, near the epicenter.

Iran's state-run news agency Irna said the epicenter was 22 kilometers northeast of the island of Kish in Hormozgan province. Its center was 22 km below the surface.
