India jumps 37 places: Set foot in top 10 in Global Cybersecurity Index 2020 rankings
India ranked fourth in the Asia-Pacific area, breaking into the top ten on the list provided by the United Nations (UN) agency for ITU.
In the 4th edition of the Global Cybersecurity Index 2020 (GCI) India was placed 10th, a huge 37-place jump from its previous GCI ranking in 2018. Notably, India ranks fourth in the Asia-Pacific region, entering into the top ten on the list by the United Nations (UN) agency for information and communication technologies (ITU).
As per the GCI Index 2020 "For each of the pillars – (i) legal, (ii) technical, (iii) organisational, (iv) capacity development, and (v) cooperation – country commitment was assessed through a question-based online survey, further which provided for the collection of supporting evidence. These questions were weighted in consultation with a panel of specialists to arrive at an overall GCI score."
82 questions were asked of the countries, and 20 indicators were measured. India received a cumulative score of 97.5 based on the assessment of the five pillars and 20 indicators.
The United States took first place in the GCI with a score of 100. The United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia tied for second place with a score of 99.54. Estonia finished third with a score of 99.48.
South Korea and Singapore ranked first and second in the Asia Pacific area, respectively, with a score of 98.52, tied for fourth overall.
Other countries at the top of the index were Russia, the UAE, and Malaysia in fifth place (98.06), Lithuania in the sixth, Japan in seventh, and Canada, France, and India in subsequent spots. Moreover, China was ranked 33rd and Pakistan was ranked 79th in the GCI 2020 study
.In the most recent edition of the GCI, India was ranked 47th, and was outperformed in the Asia-Pacific area by countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan.
