The assembly elections in Punjab have been postponed for a week, the Election Commission has praised the voting for February 20 instead of February 14. Due to Ravidas Jayanti, political parties had demanded the Election Commission to postpone the elections. Now all 117 seats will go to polls on February 20.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner demanding extension of the date of Punjab Assembly elections due to the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas ji. He had demanded to extend the date of election at least 6 days. Apart from him, other political parties had also demanded to postpone the elections.
Guru Ravidas Jayanti is on 16th February, for which lakhs of devotees will be in Banaras and will be deprived of the right to vote. Scheduled caste devotees (about 20 lakh) from the state are likely to stay in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh from 10 to 16 February 2022. In such a situation, many people of this community will not be able to cast their vote for the state assembly, which is their constitutional right.
