Cyclone Fengal Landfall Today: Schools Shut in Chennai, Puducherry Amid Heavy Rain Alert

A red alert has been issued for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal and an orange alert for Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry. IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.

Schools and colleges closed in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, and Villupuram districts. Schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal will also be closed.

6 districts—schools closed. 9 districts—schools and colleges closed. Schools closed in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Ariyalur, Sivagangai, and Pudukottai. Both schools and colleges are closed in Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, and Trichy.
Waterlogging, flight disruptions
Chennai and surrounding areas have gotten 60 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Rain has caused waterlogging in many parts of the city and heavy traffic. Flights are severely disrupted at Chennai airport.
Cyclone Fengal updates
As per the latest IMD updates, Cyclone Fengal is located 470 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai.

Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 10 km/h during the past 6 hours and lay centred at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 26th of November 2024, over the same region near latitude 7.5°N and longitude 82.6°E, about 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 580 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai.
It will continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm on the 27th. Then it will move north-northwestwards towards the TN coast, skirting the Sri Lankan coast for the next two days," IMD tweeted.
