COVAXIN Finally gets WHO Approval
The vaccine was already in use in the massive vaccination drive in India and a major chunk of people received the same vaccine.
The World Health Organization granted the Indian vaccine "Covaxin" an emergency use listing. It basically means that this India-made vaccine will ultimately be acknowledged by other countries. This comes as a huge relief to the Indians who received the shot of Covaxin and faced restrictions while traveling abroad even though they were vaccinated.
The vaccine was already in use in the massive vaccination drive in India and a major chunk of people received the same vaccine. Thus, the fact that this was not acknowledged by the other counties due to WHO's disapproval was a matter of concern for Indians who received the shot. Covaxin had been set for use in all age groups (18+) over two doses spaced four weeks apart.
The World Health Organization tweeted that, "Covaxin was also reviewed by WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE), and recommended use of this vaccine (is) in two doses, with an interval of four weeks, in all age groups 18+.,"
The WHO also confirmed in a tweet that Covaxin had been found to be "78 per cent effective against COVID-19 of any severity, 14 or more days after the second dose, and is extremely suitable for low- and middle-income countries due to easy storage requirements".
