Chidambaram tears into Modi govt’s claim of world record of vaccinations on a ‘single day’
To fulfil the centre's goal of entirely vaccinating all adults by the end of this year, 97 lakh vaccines must be administered per day. The present supply situation raises doubts about whether the goal will be fulfilled.
P Chidambaram slammed the Narendra Modi administration after India experienced a substantial drop in overall vaccinations on Tuesday, compared to the record number of shots provided on Monday.
On Monday, the nation delivered a record 88 lakh Covid-19 vaccines.
Congress leader P Chidambaram exposed the working order behind the centre's "record" vaccinations in a day, in a three-step deconstruction and a scorching critique of the centre's vaccination programme.
P Chidambaram tweeted, "Hoard on Sunday, vaccinate on Monday, and go back to limping on Tuesday. That is the secret behind the world "record" of vaccinations on a "single day"."
Immunization numbers in the country fell to 54.22 lakh on Tuesday, down from a record 88 lakh on Monday, raising doubts about whether such large-scale vaccination is sustainable, even if the government has pledged to vaccinate everyone by the end of December.
The senior Congress leader then remarked, as if to rub salt in the wound, that this "feat" is sure to be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Not content with it, he subsequently reworked the BJP's 2019 election slogan, "Modi hai, Mumkin hai".
The issue appeared to be of supply, with accusations that certain states, notably Madhya Pradesh, had been stockpiling vaccine doses for days in order to accomplish 'Magic Monday.'
Seven of the top ten states with the highest number of dosages are governed by the BJP.
Amit Malviya, a BJP politician, reacted to Chidambaram's remarks by blaming Congress-ruled states of "dragging India down."
To fulfil the centre's goal of entirely vaccinating all adults by the end of this year, 97 lakh vaccines must be administered per day. The present supply situation raises doubts about whether the goal will be fulfilled.
The government claims to be able to stockpile and administer the needed amount of vaccinations on a daily basis.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Modi said that the central government was beginning the 'Free Vaccination For All campaign' for every Indian.
