BJP's majority in the UP Legislative Council
BJP has won 33 seats out of 36 MLC seats. Two seats have come in the account of independents. Former minister and MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh's newly formed party Jansatta Dal Loktantrik won one seat.
After the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, with a bumper victory in the local authority constituency elections in the Legislative Council, the BJP has managed to get a majority after five years in the 100-seat Upper House. Till now Samajwadi party dominated here in the elections.
After winning 33 out of 36 seats in the Local Authority Constituency, the BJP now has 66 members in the Legislative Council. SP has only 17 MLC left. This will make it easier for the BJP to pass the bill in the Upper House as well.
The BSP has four members in the Legislative Council while the Congress has only one member. Apna Dal, Nishad Party, Jansatta Dal Loktantrik have one seat each. Three independents, two teachers' team and one seat are with the independent group. Presently three seats are vacant. In these, Yogi Adityanath and Thakur Jaiveer Singh have resigned from the post of MLC due to becoming MLA. At the same time, due to the death of Leader of Opposition Ahmed Hassan of SP, his seat is also lying vacant.
