Ministry of external affairs expressed "deep concern" over Das's arrest and denial of bail. "It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings. We also note with concern the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Shri Das," it said in a statement.

Who is Chinmoy Krishna Das?
Das is working as the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, which represents the voice of and advocates rights and security for minorities.
He has a history of loud agitation in favor of the Hindu (Sanatani) communities of Bangladesh, demanding fundamental reforms such as a minority protection law, speedy tribunal justice for minorities in persecution, and a separate ministry of minority affairs.
He has received extensive attention for organizing huge rallies-public such as the one on October 25 in Chittagong, and then in Rangpur on November 22-which has caused substantial socio-political debate and discussion across the country.

Why was Das arrested?
The controversy erupted when a sedition case was lodged by the police against Chinmoy Krishna Das and 18 others on October 30 at Chittagong.
The allegations are false and concern the hoisting of a saffron flag over the official flag of Bangladesh during the rally held on the 25th of October at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram.
Das appeared in front of a Chittagong court on Tuesday, whose bail plea was denied and he was sent to custody. The arrest has enraged and many demand the immediate release of Das.
