While on one end, a witch hunt seemed to have been initiated against Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad, which has taken the form of rape and death threats even after her public apology, former cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir on Sunday hit out at "secular liberals" for their silence on the matter.
Gambhir wrote, "Silence of so-called ‘secular liberals’ on the sickening display of hatred & death threats throughout the country against a woman who has apologized is surely DEAFENING! #LetsTolerateIntolerance."
The alleged objectionable statement made by Sharma during a televised debate was opposed by several Muslim organizations. The BJP had suspended Sharma from the party, thinking that the controversy should not get heated. However, despite this, protests are still taking place against Sharma in many cities of the country. Some extremists have even threatened to kill him. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Imtiyaz Jaleel had demanded the "hanging" of Sharma.
