All vacant posts of judges in Supreme Court will be filled soon
Advocate Saurabh Kirpal was recommended for elevation to the Delhi High Court, Somashekhar Sundarsan to the Bombay High Court and R John Sathyan to the Madras High Court. In Kirpal's case, the court rejected both, citing that the candidate was openly gay and that his partner was a Swiss citizen. The court had said that dismissing him on these grounds would be clearly contrary to constitutional principles.

Soon all 34 posts in the Supreme Court will be filled with appointments to the vacant posts of judges. Two High Court judges are likely to be promoted. Top sources of the government have confirmed this to NDTV. Sources said the warrant for the appointment is expected to be issued in the next few days. Earlier, when Ranjan Gogoi was the Chief Justice of India (CJI), all the posts of judges in the Supreme Court were filled. The judges who are being promoted were recently recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. Justice Rajesh Bindal is the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and Justice Arvind Kumar is the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
The government is also in the process of appointing three Chief Justices of the High Courts. The government is yet to reply on the reinterment of five judges in various high courts and also take a political decision on whether it agrees with the recommendations of the collegium.Last month, the Supreme Court uploaded on its website its letter to the Center rebutting the government's objections based on inputs from intelligence agencies.
