His real name is believed to be Mohamed Salah al-Din Zaidan, but there is a story behind the name Saif al-Adel. Saif al-Adel means 'Sword of Justice' which means sword of justice. That's why he changed his name.
Saif al-Adel has been a colonel in the Egyptian army. After the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat in 1988, he left Egypt to work with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan to drive out Soviet forces.
