9 Lemons Auctioned at Villupuram Temple For Rs 2.36 Lakh: The Villupuram temple auctions lemons spiked with Lord Muruga's spear, said to cure infertility, and bring prosperity.
In a tradition dating back years, the sacred lemons adorning the spear of the deity Lord Murugan in a temple in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district have drawn attention once again. At an auction held on Tuesday, these lemons were auctioned for Rs 2.36 lakh. Their significance goes beyond their monetary value as devotees revere them greatly. Local beliefs believe that lemonade made from these sacred fruits cures infertility and brings prosperity to families.
"The temple is famous for its sacred lemons. People strongly believe that the lemons spiked in Lord Muruga's spear have magical powers," said a villager.
Located in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, Ottanandal is home to the Rathinavelpandiyan Murugan temple, which sits atop a hill and is known for its breathtaking beauty. The temple's main deity, Murugan, stands five feet high, captivating devotees.
This temple celebrates Panguni Uthiram every year, which begins on March 15 and continues for nine days. A unique ritual involved the Rathinavelpandiyan Murugan temple during these nine days of celebration. The lemons worshipped in the temple were auctioned.
"Childless couples buy the lemons as there is a strong belief that the lemon cures infertility. Traders and businessmen buy the lemon seeking prosperity in their business ventures," said another villager.
The "most auspicious and powerful" lemon spiked on a spear on the festival's first day was purchased by a couple from Kulathur village for Rs 50,500.
The festival continues to perpetuate age-old customs and beliefs in the region.
