7th year in a row Modi offers chadar to Muslim Sufi Saint shrine of Ajmer
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti has been credited with increasing bonhomie between the followers of the two biggest religions in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has handed over a chadar to Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi that will be offered on his behalf at the shrine of renowned Muslim Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti at Ajmer.
Narendra Modi is a member of the right-wing Bhartiya Janata Party. Traditionally the party and its members have advocated Hindu nationalist positions.
The shrine at Ajmer, Rajasthan is one of the holiest Muslim Sufi shrines in India and is frequented in large number by the faithful. Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti has been credited with spreading Islam in India and increasing bonhomie between the followers of the two biggest religions here.
Amid alleged conflicting relations between the Prime Minister and the Muslim minority in the country this gesture could be largely seen as merely a customary action devoid of any emotions. This would also be seen as an act to woo a part of the strategically positioned and gullible minority in context of the forthcoming Bengal elections where a sizeable chunk of the voters belong to this community.
"Handed over a Chadar that would be offered at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on the 809th Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti," Modi tweeted.
