52 healthcare workers developed side effects out of 4319 vaccinated on January 16 in Delhi

On the first day of the vaccination drive that started on January 16, Delhi has reported 51 minor and 1 major side effects on healthcare and frontline workers.

Delhi’s Health Minister Satyender Jain said that 51 persons have developed minor complications. In Delhi, out of the total target of 8117 in eleven districts, only 4319 came forward to take the shot.

The Minister said that in one case, a 22-year-old security guard showed an adverse side effect and he was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.

His health is reported to be stable.

It is not clear which vaccine has produced the highest number of side effects as both were administered to healthcare workers. While some hospitals got Covaxin, some were given Covishield. 

The government had earlier made it clear that those who will come forward to take the vaccine will not have any option to choose between Covishield and Covaxin.

The vaccination process was voluntary and there was no compulsion on any person to take the shot.

The minister said that on average only 50 percent of people came forward for vaccination from across the country and the rest stayed away from it.

Many experts blame that it is due to vaccine hesitancy as a lot of people don’t want to be vaccinated due to different reasons.

Also, the recent controversy over the approval granted to Covaxin in the absence of any safety data has also contributed to stop people from coming forward and take the shot.

Though the government has already assured that both the vaccines are safe and effective and there is no reason to doubt it.
