A high-level investigation has been ordered into the incident.
TV footage showed a number of train coaches lying on their sides along the elevated tracks as rescuers attempted to extricate themselves from passengers. Sources said a rescue train was dispatched to the scene. The Jalpaiguri District Administration said some injured passengers were rushed to a hospital in nearby Moynaguri.
