UP Police Chief Orders Heightened Surveillance, Intelligence Gathering at Religious Events

UP Police Chief Orders Heightened Surveillance: Police chief of Lucknow City in Uttar Pradesh, Prashant Kumar, has directed senior-ranking officers to further heighten their vigilance and intelligence-gathering efforts regarding the attendance of religious gatherings being organized throughout the state.

As per the official statement, this order was directed to all police commissioners, additional directors general, regional inspectors general, deputy inspectors general, and district superintendents.

The reports from the Special Task Force Assert that criminals use the gathering of these religious events as a cover-up to evade arrests after committing crimes, the sources were further told.

In some cases, tried-and-tested criminals made use of such events to escape police action.

In this view, DG Kumar stated that men should keep a watch on persons coming from other districts and states to attend a religious event.

The STF findings suggested that some criminals took refuge at these gatherings to avoid detection.

The DGP noted that Sunil Kumar, a police inspector, was martyred during a recent encounter with a criminal in Shamli district. Investigations later revealed that the accused had used religious congregations to evade law enforcement.

The district intelligence units and social media monitoring cells should be activated to track movements of individuals attending such programmes, he said.

The synergetic efforts of local police units shall be encouraged to spot any suspicious persons, he had added.

Political authorities should liaise with event organizers to collect detailed records of attendees so that such information is available for law enforcement whenever necessary, as instructed by the DGP.

A register of attendees should be made in which their details, including valid identification such as Aadhaar, according to the directive.

It is mandatory to carry out such checks on a monthly basis so as to ascertain whether any criminal elements exploit these events for hiding purposes.

Strict enforcement of these directives has been ordered for police officials; it is their duty to ensure that criminals do not misuse the religious events for shelter while maintaining public peace and order.
