UNHCR has issued a warning about an impending humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan.

The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has issued a warning that a humanitarian crisis is looming in Afghanistan as the violence escalates, causing more human suffering and civilian displacement. Since January 2021, some 270,000 Afghans have been internally displaced, largely due to instability and violence, bringing the total uprooted population to over 3.5 million, according to the UN.

Families who have been forced to evacuate their homes in recent weeks identify the deteriorating security situation as the primary reason for their departure, according to the statement. Extortion by non-state armed groups and the presence of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on major highways have been reported by displaced populations to UNHCR and partners. As a result of increased insecurity, many people have reported disruptions in social services and a loss of income.

According to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, civilian casualties increased by 29% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2020. Women and children made up a growing percentage of those targeted. "Those who have been forced to evacuate unexpectedly have immediate needs. Despite problems in reaching vulnerable individuals, UNHCR and partners are providing newly displaced Afghans with emergency shelter, food, health, water and sanitation support, and monetary assistance as part of a coordinated response "

According to the UNHCR, prolonged fighting, high levels of displacement, the impact of COVID-19, frequent natural catastrophes, especially drought, and rising poverty have tested the Afghan people's resilience. Children and young people make up about 65 percent of the Afghan population, both inside and outside of Afghanistan. "Failure to establish a peace accord in Afghanistan and end the current violence will result in more displacement within the country, as well as to neighbouring countries and beyond," the UN agency warned.

Iran and Pakistan are home to about 90% of Afghan refugees, with more than two million registered Afghan refugees in total, according to the report.
