Heavy Snowfall Expected in Kashmir, IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert for Himachal Pradesh
It’s about to get colder across the country! As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s latest forecast, fresh snowfall is expected in the Himalayan states over three to four days. This snowfall is expected to lower the temperatures across India. A cold wave-like situation is also expected in some states.

IMD has predicted heavy snowfall for Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and Sunday. this is due to an active western disturbance that lies over the Himalayan region. They predicted light to moderate snowfall in the western Himalayan region. Furthermore, heavy snowfall is predicted in Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 and 5. Peak snowfall is expected from Saturday night through Monday morning.
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said, “There is an active western disturbance over the western Himalayan region. Light to moderate snowfall is expected in the next 4-5 days, with heavy snowfall likely in Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 and 5. Adjoining plains can also experience light to moderate rainfall.”

Western disturbance to bring snowfall
A Western disturbance lies as a cyclonic circulation over west Afghanistan and neighbourhood in lower to upper tropospheric levels, IMD said. According to the weather expert, the western Himalayan region would receive moderate snowfall over the next 4-5 days.
Forecasting heavy snowfall, Naresh Kumar said that precipitation is expected in Jammu and Kashmir on January 4 and 5, accompanied by light to moderate rain in the adjoining plain areas.

IMD's definition of cold wave encompasses weather conditions when the minimum temperature of a station is 10 degrees Celsius or less for plain areas and 0 degrees Celsius for hilly regions.
Dense fog to persist in several regions
Very dense fog is likely during the late night and early morning hours in isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Dense fog conditions are also expected in Himachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, and north Madhya Pradesh. Bihar may experience dense fog on January 4, while parts of Uttar Pradesh could see foggy conditions extending from January 7 to 9.
