Gautam Gambhir’s Plan Raises Doubts About India Star’s Future Amid Kohli-Rohit Debate

Gautam Gambhir’s Plan: The Indian cricket team, despite starting the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy with an emphatic 295-run win in Perth, lost the series 1-3, relinquishing the coveted trophy after a decade.

Except for a few players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, most of the Indian squad faced scrutiny for their lacklustre performances, including star players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach was also questioned by several former cricketers and experts.

Despite the senior players’ struggles, head coach Gautam Gambhir defended them. Addressing their future in the team, Gambhir stated that both players still possessed the "hunger and passion" to represent India. He described them as "tough" individuals and expressed hope they would continue contributing to Indian cricket. Gambhir clarified that decisions regarding their future would prioritise the team’s interests.

Gambhir Leaves Rohit-Kohli's Futures For Them To Decide

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said struggling stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have the hunger to excel and will decide on their Test future keeping the team's best interest in mind.

Gambhir's comments on the two veterans came after India's 1-3 series loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia won the fifth and final here to reclaim the BGT after 10 years, knocking India out of the World Test Championship final in the process.

"They are tough people with hunger, they'll decide what is best for Indian cricket," said Gambhir at the post-match media interaction.

"To keep the dressing room happy, I have to be honest and fair to everyone. Rohit Sharma showed accountability at the top," said the head coach.

"I can't talk about the future of any player. It's up to them as well. They still have the hunger, they still have the passion, they are tough people, and hopefully, they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. Whatever they plan, they will plan in the best interest of the team. I have to be fair and equal to everyone in the dressing room," Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.

During the Sydney Test, Rohit addressed the constantly growing speculations around his retirement and offered assurance about his place in the team by saying he is not going anywhere.
