228 Flights Cancelled at Delhi Airport Amid Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions; 24 Airports Closed Nationwide

228 Flights Cancelled at Delhi Airport: Disruption in air services persisted at Delhi Airport for a second consecutive day due to heightened tensions between Pakistan and India, causing continued airspace restrictions and resulting in cancelations and delays. PDG said their conditions also worsened after Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks on India, targeting cities scattered across Jammu, Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

According to the APIs of Delhi International Airport, within the last two days 228 cancellations of flights were also logged by the airport. At least 138 flights were canceled by the airport on Friday comprised of 63 arrivals from domestic flights, 66 domestic departures, 4 international arrivals, and 5 international departures.

On May 8th DIAL reported more than 90 cancellations and over 200 delays mostly between the time of 8 am - 2 PM during peak hours.

“Delhi airport operations are normal. But because of changing airspace conditions and increased security protocols, some flight schedules and security processing times might be affected,” DIAL tweeted on X on Friday.

DIAL also runs India’ s busiest airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). DIAL requested passengers to please allow extra time at security checks and cooperate with your airline and security personnel for enhanced processing.

DIAL may not be the biggest issues for air travel as additionally disruption was served up with the Civil Aviation Ministry stating that 24 airports would be closed for civil flight operations to May 10. Airports affected by the announcement include Bathinda, Jammy, Amritsar, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and other airports across the region.

Tensions between the two nations reached a new height with the firing of a Pakistani missile and drone across Indian territory. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the drone had launched from Pakistan, parts of which were intercepted by Indian air defence. As a result, there were power cuts and air raid distress calls were sent out across a number of cities, even delaying an existing IPL match in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

This ramp-up comes on the heels of India's military attack on Pakistan and PoK, ie the retribution of "Operation Sindoor" after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
