Young Indians Face Higher Unemployment Odds Despite Education: According to the International Labour Organization, Indians with higher education are more likely to be unemployed.
There's a 29.1% unemployment rate among graduates in India, nearly nine times higher than 3.4% for illiterates.
"Unemployment in India was predominantly a problem among youths, especially youths with a secondary level of education or higher, and it intensified over time," the ILO said.
Educated youth unemployment has increased from 54.2 percent to 65.7 percent since 2003, while Indian youth unemployment is expected to reach 82.9 percent in 2022.
Despite its high unemployment rate, the Indian economy hasn't been able to attract new educated youth workers."
The unemployment rate for 16-24-year-olds rose to 15.3% in the first two months of the year.
Youth unemployment in urban areas was six times higher, reaching 18.4%. 76.7% of unemployed educated youths were women, while 62.2% were men.
Despite the pandemic, India has one of the lowest female labor force participation rates.
An ILO report says Indian workers' skills don't match the jobs being created.
Other well-known economists have also warned. India's poor schooling will hurt the economy because of these alarming trends.
