According to Sergei Melikov, head of Dagestan, the shooting started when traffic officers had tried to stop the car that the assailants were driving.

According to the Interior Ministry, the attack took place at about 1420 local time (1120 GMT) in the region's capital of Makhachkala.
According to a spokesman from the city administration on Telegram, two of the shooters have been killed, and he named both suspects, who were born in 2000.
It was not clear immediately how many shooters were involved. Other perpetrators fled in a car, state media reported.
Multiple bodies were visible in a video published on Telegram channels and verified by Reuters, lying on a street in the city beside a police vehicle. More gunshots could be heard down the street as passersby stopped to have a look at the bodies.

The other duo of shooters and two policemen, as well as civilians wounded in the violence among them a 17-year-old girl, were taken to hospital, where at least one of the civilians succumbed to injuries, according to state media. A criminal case into the incident has been opened.
Being a predominantly Muslim region, Dagestan has witnessed several fatal attacks in the last few years.
In March, counter-terrorism forces neutralized four militants from ISIS who authorities said were preparing to attack the regional interior ministry branch.
