Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has said that his government has laid stress on reservoir and lake construction with a view to solving the water problem in the state. According to him, the Suryadhar reservoir will prove to be a new milestone in the development of the state.
The Chief Minister said this while inaugurating the Suryadhar Lake at Doiwala near Dehradun at a cost of around Rs 50 crore. Constructed at a cost of about Rs 50.25 crore, the lake has a holding capacity of 77 thousand cubic meters. The lake is 550 meters long, 28 meters wide, and 10 meters deep.
On this occasion, he said that apart from meeting the drinking water and irrigation needs of 18-20 villages, this lake will also recharge the water sources in the area. At the same time, it will create a healthy ecosystem, which will also attract migratory birds.
Chief Minister Rawat hoped that this would give a new dimension to the development of the state. Regional people will get benefits. The farmers of the area will be able to irrigate their fields by taking water from the lake for 12 months.
Situated between Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun, Suryadhara is full of natural beauty and hence it will emerge as a major tourist and water sports center in the coming days.
The Uttarakhand government plans to organize the Jalkrida (water fun) festival in the lake on Makar Sankranti or Basant Panchami next year. The next lakes on its development agenda are the Song and Jamrani dams.
He said that with the construction of these dams, there will be a saving of Rs 100 crore on the purchase of electricity. He also spoke about the steps taken by the state government to revive rivers like Rispana and Bindal.
