Supreme Court: Justice UU Lalit in action on the very first day as CJI, listed 900 petitions for hearing

He has set an impressive performance by listing over 900 petitions for Somavar to be heard on his first day as Chief Justice. These petitions include many cases including Karnataka Hijab controversy, Kerala journalist Siddiqui Kappan's bail, Gautam Navlakha.
Monday is Justice UU Lalit's first working day as CJI. He was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of the country on Saturday, but the court does not function on Saturdays and Sundays. According to the cause list uploaded on the apex court's website, a bench headed by CJI Lalit on Monday in court room number one, comprising Justice S Ravindra Bhat.
According to the roster uploaded on the Supreme Court website, the CJI has assigned around 60 cases each to 15 benches. A total of 900 cases are to be heard. There will be a maximum official business time of 270 minutes from 10.30 am to 4 pm to deal with these petitions. This means, on an average, it will take a little over four minutes to settle a case. The maximum number of 65 petitions have been referred to a bench headed by Justice MR Shah.
