At the age of 17, he scored his first Test century at the Old Trafford ground in England. He became the youngest century in Test cricket for India.
In the year 2000, he became the first cricketer to score 50 centuries in international cricket. In 2003, he scored 673 runs in the World Cup. This is the record for most runs in a world. He holds the record for scoring the most runs and centuries in both Tests and ODIs. He is the only cricketer to score 100 centuries in international cricket. He retired from international cricket at the Wankhede Ground in Mumbai in 2013.
