Rohit Sharma’s Test Captaincy Future Uncertain? Gambhir’s Viewpoint Holds Key
The fate of Rohit Sharma hangs in the balance over his becoming Test captain after the shambles of Team India in the BGT. A big decision is expected to come up during IPL 2025.
Rohit Sharma’s Test Captaincy: Team India's shambolic racial run at the Border Gavaskar Trophy remains a suspense-creating Future for the Test captain Rohit Sharma. The recent success in the Champions Trophy might strengthen his case for continuation as the Test skipper, but a call on the matter is expected to be taken during the IPL 2025 season. Rohit, however, continues as Team India's red-ball skipper before all that.

Team India's glorious stretch in the ICC Champions Trophy surely kindled a spark in its captain Rohit Sharma. His credibility and portfolio in white-ball cricket have slightly elevated with the fact that he has captained the army undefeated through the challenge as they closed out the coveted title. However, Men in Blue have had a shaky track record in red-ball contests, suffering a rather poor outing recently from the Border Gavaskar Trophy Series Down Under. Great calls would probably be made even before the Indian side embarks on its next test tour in England, while Rohit will most likely still be captain throughout other preparations.
"Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney, where he explained that a team can't carry on with multiple out-of-form batters. After Australia Tests, India haven't played any Tests, and hence there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he doesn't want to play Tests," a BCCI source said while speaking to PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Team India head for the England tour as soon as the IPL 2025 season concludes. The English tour strategy will be detailed by the BCCI selection committee when the IPL series happens. But Gautam Gambhir's inputs as head coach are expected to significantly steer the process.
"The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously, with all matches televised, they always don't need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player from up close. So once IPL starts, the blueprint for England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir's viewpoint will have a lot of weightage," the sources added.
The IPL 2025 season is set to begin on March 22 with the inaugural match, which will be played at the Eden Gardens, featuring Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
