Rajoana Case: SC to hear today on the hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana, guilty in the murder of Punjab CM

The Supreme Court is hearing today the case related to the hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the 1995 assassination case of the then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. A three-judge bench will hear Rajoana's plea. Let us inform that Rajoana has filed an appeal to commute the death sentence to life imprisonment. A decade has passed since his mercy petition was pending with the government.

Rajoana has been in jail since January 1996 and his mercy petition was filed in March 2012. Rajoana's lawyer Mukul Rohatgi has given this information. Rohatgi said that his client has been facing the death penalty since 2007. Rajoana was sentenced to death in July 2007. He was a former constable of the Punjab Police and was convicted for his involvement in the August 31, 1995 blast outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat. Let us inform that 16 other people including the then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh were killed in this blast.
