Rajiv Gandhi Foundation's license canceled, action taken on allegations of foreign funding
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to investigate the matter of funding from China to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. The ministry had constituted this committee to probe the violation of various legal provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Income Tax Act, Foreign Contribution Regulatory Act (FCRA) etc.
The Central Government has canceled the license of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, an NGO affiliated to the Gandhi family, for alleged violation of the law. This action comes after an inquiry conducted by an inter-ministerial committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2020.
An official said that the FCRA license of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation has been canceled after an inquiry was conducted against it. Let us tell you that the President of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation is Sonia Gandhi. Apart from this, other trustees of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation include former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was established to carry forward the legacy of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. The meeting was held in July 1991 under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and a resolution for the Foundation was passed. Established in 1991, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation has worked from 1991 to 2009 on many important issues including health, science and technology, women and children, disability assistance etc. According to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation website, the organization has also worked in the education sector.
