POTUS Unmasks Vaccine Sharing Plan, Announced Road Map for First 25 Million Doses.
As demand for vaccines falls in the USA, the Biden-Harris administration is ready to share 75% of its excess doses.
On Thursday, the White House announced that the USA will share its excess vaccines with the world in the service of ending the pandemic. A plan of action was announced for sharing of the first 25 million doses and an announcement was made to share a total of 80 million doses globally by the end of June. 25% of the vaccines are reserved for the emergency and sharing them directly with its allies.
“The American people will remain endangered as long as this pandemic rages anyplace in the world,” Mr. Biden said in a statement. “And the United States is determined to instilling in worldwide vaccination efforts the same sense of urgency that we have displayed at home.” the government of the United States has made a significant commitment by sharing millions of vaccines with other countries. He also stated that the United States would continue to monitor scientific developments and work closely with its democratic allies to coordinate a global effort, particularly through the G7.
As per the official website of The White House (whitehouse.gov), 19 million doses are set to be shared through COVAX. South and Central America will receive 6 million doses, 7 million doses will b provided to the Asian countries including India and 5 million doses are reserved for Africa.COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) is a global program aimed at providing equal access to COVID-19 vaccines.
The remaining 6 million will be distributed among Mexico, Canada, and the Republic of Korea, West Bank and Gaza, Ukraine, Kosovo, Haiti, Georgia, Egypt, Jordan, India, Iraq, and Yemen, as well as for the United Nations frontline workers. The president has also agreed to provide 20 million vaccination doses from Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccine supplies. In the next months, more doses are planned to be made available for sharing.
Restrictions were also lifted from sharing vaccines produced by AstraZeneca, Sanofi, and Novavax. The companies are advised to decide their vaccine sharing framework by themselves. While allocation to Asian countries is low in this batch, India is looking forward to the next phase of the distribution.
Lifting of restrictions from companies will help India to procure vaccines directly from the private players which may boost up a sluggish vaccination campaign in the country.
