A proposal from Poland to send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine hasn’t gone down well with the United States of America as it feels that the proposal can raise serious concerns for the whole entire alliance in the region.
Poland has proposed that it would send these Soviet-era fighter jets to the US base in Ramstein, Germany, from where these would be sent to Ukraine to help it fight against the Russian forces. Poland has also proposed that to replace the MiG-29, the USA should send F-16 fighter jets as replacements.
However, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby doesn’t think that it is a viable suggestion as these jets will fly from the US-NATO base into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine and this proposition would raise serious concerns of the entire NATO alliance.
In a statement, Kirby raised doubt on the proposal and said, "We will continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies about this issue and the difficult logistical challenges it presents, but we do not believe Poland's proposal is a tenable one."
Raising questions to the logic of such proposals he added, "It is simply not clear to us that there is a substantive rationale for it.” US and NATO allies want to help Ukraine but they don’t want the conflict to be escalated further and cause another confrontation.
