In an order at the bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava during February 21, it was noted that the I&FCD had submitted a report dated February 20 with respect to the status of desilting of the drains, which also included details regarding timelines for completion of the work.
As per report, the timeline to complete the desilting work across all drains is May 31. Most of the work has been completed by February 14 in Moat Drain of Vijay Ghat , followed by Civil-Military Drain , Maharani Bagh Drain , Abul Fazal Drain , Kushak Drain , Tuglakabad Drain and Sunehri Pul Drain.
On the other hand, the least desilting work complete was those of Sonia Vihar Drain, Shastri Park Drain, Sen Nursing Home Drain, Kailash Nagar Drain, and Barapulla Drain.

"It has been pointed out that if the desilting work is not completed by the I&FCD within the timeline then this year monsoon will start and the residents of the colony from where these drains are flowing may face the same flooding or overflowing problem of these drains which they had faced in the previous monsoon," said the bench, the tribunal also comprises judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel.
That is why it was so necessary to desilt the 24 drains before May 31.
"Hence, we require the additional chief secretary, I&FCD to submit an undertaking by February 25 that the work of desilting as disclosed will be completed within the stipulated timeline," the tribunal said.
It directed the additional chief secretary to appear virtually on the next date of hearing to inform the tribunal about its adhering to the timelines and ensuring no flooding during the monsoon.
The matter has been fixed for the next hearing on February 27.
