The country's virologist Tulio de Oliveira told the media on Thursday that a Kovid variant with multiple mutations has emerged in South Africa. After this, the United Kingdom (UK) has announced a temporary suspension of flights from 6 African countries (UK Bans Flights). UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid gave information about the cancellation of flights.
Javid said in a tweet, 'UKHSA is investigating a new version and more data is needed but we are still taking precautions.' He further said, 'Six African countries will be added to the red list from Friday afternoon. Flights will be temporarily banned and UK passengers will have to be in quarantine.
The UK's Health Protection Agency said in a statement, 'The variant contains a large number of spike protein mutations as well as mutations in other parts of the viral genome. These are potentially biologically important mutations that can change the behavior of the virus with respect to vaccines, treatments and transmission. It needs more investigation.
