The bridge was inaugurated by the granddaughter of company owner Jaisukhbhai Patel on Gujarati New Year's Day (25 October). On Saturday, Jaisukhbhai Patel had claimed in a press conference that after repair, this bridge has now become so strong that no one can move it for the next 8 to 10 years.
There will be a hearing in the Supreme Court today regarding the Morbi bridge accident case in Gujarat. The court will hear on Monday a petition seeking constitution of a judicial commission to probe the bridge collapse incident. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli will hear the PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. The petition states that the incident shows the negligence and gross failure of the officers. Advocate Vishal Tiwari had requested for urgent listing of the matter on November 1.
A total of 134 people, including women and children, were killed when a British-era cable bridge over the Machchu river collapsed in Gujarat's Morbi town on October 30. In his petition, advocate Vishal Tiwari said, "For the last one decade, there have been several incidents in our country in which mismanagement, dereliction of duty and negligence of maintenance have resulted in huge loss of lives, which could have been avoided."
The accident in Morbi in Gujarat shook the whole country. This bridge was closed for repairs for the last 7 months. According to the local administration, the work of repair and maintenance of the bridge was given on a 15-year lease to a private company. But this company did not take any fitness certificate before opening the bridge to the public.
