Jamshed J Irani, who was called the steel man of India, died at the age of 86
Tata Steel said that the Tata Group is saddened by the demise of Padma Vibhushan Dr Jamshed J Irani. Jamshed J Irani had retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011.
Jamshed J Irani, known as the Steel Man of the country, has passed away. He was 86 years old and breathed his last on Monday (31 October) at 10 pm in Jamshedpur. Tata Steel has given this information. Tata Steel said that the Tata Group is saddened by the demise of Padma Vibhushan Dr Jamshed J Irani. Jamshed J Irani had retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011.
Jamshed was born on 2 June 1936. He did B.Sc from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and MSc from Nagpur University in 1958. After this he became a scholar and went to study at the University of Sheffield, UK. Here he completed his Masters in the year 1960 and completed his PhD in the year 1963.
Jamshed started his career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association. It was the year 1963 but he always wanted to work for his country. So he returned to India in the year 1968 and founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company. This company is known today as Tata Steel.
Jamshed J Irani became the General Superintendent in the year 1978. After this, he was appointed General Manager in the year 1979 and Chairman of Tata Steel in the year 1985. He then became the Joint Managing Director of Tata Steel in 1988 and Managing Director in 1992. He retired in the year 2001. He also served as a director of several Tata Group companies including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices.
