India will play against Britain In Men’s Hockey Quarter Final On August 1
Indian team have won four matches and lost one match out of five league matches in the group of six teams
New Delhi: The stage is set for the knock-out matches in the men’s Hockey event of Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. On August 1, India will play their quarter-final match against Great Britain at 5.30 pm.
All the league matches have finished on Friday. Australia and Belgium have topped their respective pools with 13 points each. India with 12 points, placed second in pool A behind Australia. Indian men’s team have won four matches and lost one match out of five league matches in the group of six teams. Indian team scored 15 goals and the opponents scored 13 goals against them. Indian team has faced only one defeat, against Australia by a huge margin of 1-7, in the league phase. They will be up against Great Britain, who is placed third in pool B with 8 points. They have won 2, drew 2 and lost one match.
India is an eight time Gold Medal winner team in the history of men’s hockey competition of Olympic Games. They last won a medal (Gold) in hockey ,four decades ago, in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Saturday will be the rest day, but we know that Indian team will practice hard and try to be in the best shape physically and mentally for the crucial match on Sunday.
Reigning Olympic gold medalists Argentina kept their title hopes alive by qualifying for the competition quarter-finals thanks to a battling victory over New Zealand as the men’s pool phase came to a dramatic conclusion.
Argentina’s win against the Black Sticks ensured a third-place finish in Pool A, behind winners Australia and second-placed India, with Spain – who claimed a dramatic 1-1 draw against Australia earlier in the day – taking the fourth qualification spot, with New Zealand and hosts Japan both eliminated.
Germany produced a superb performance to defeat the Netherlands 3-1, a result which saw them finish second in Pool B behind winners Belgium, who drew 2-2 with Great Britain. Great Britain and the Netherlands finished Pool B placed third and fourth respectively.
According to the format quarter-finals will be as follows:
1st Pool A v 4th Pool B – Match 1
2nd Pool B v 3rd Pool A – Match 2
2nd Pool A v 3rd Pool B – Match 3
1st Pool B v 4th Pool A – Match 4
In the Quarter Finals leader of pool A Australia will meet Netherlands, 4th placed team of pool B. Argentina, third placed team of pool A will play against Germany, second placed team of pool B. India, placed second in pool A will play against Great Britain, who is placed third in pool B with 8 points. They have won 2, drew 2 and lost one match. Belgium, topper of pool B will meet Spain, placed 4th in pool A
The winners of these matches will play for 1st to 4th places. The semi-finals will be as follows although the matches will not necessarily be played in this order:
Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2
Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4
The winners of these matches will play for 1st and 2nd places (Gold and Silver medals) and the losers will play for 3rd and 4th places (Bronze medal) .
The action continues on Saturday (31 July) with the final round of matches from the women’s pool phase determining the line-up for the quarter-finals, which will be played on Monday 2nd August. The action begins in Pool B with China (5th – 3pts) facing New Zealand (3rd – 6pts), Argentina (2nd – 9pts) playing Australia (1st – 12 pts) and Japan (6th – 0pts) taking on Spain (4th – 6pts). In Pool A, India (5th – 3pts) meet South Africa (6th – 0pts), Germany (2nd – 12 pts) face the Netherlands (1st – 12pts) and Ireland (4th - 3pts) play Great Britain (3rd – 6pts).
The hockey competitions at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 taking place from July 24 to August 6, 2021. Both the men’s and women’s competitions feature 12 teams, split into two pools of six ahead of quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches.
