Legendary India cricket Sunil Gavaskar has expressed deep anguish on the way Rohit Sharma played and got out in the first inning of the 4th test match between India and Australia at Gabba.
The Little Master, as he is popularly known, was in the commentary box for Australian broadcaster Channel Cricket 7 when he watched Rohit Sharma taking on Nathan Lyon.
Rohit couldn’t time the shot well and he was caught on the long on by Mitchell Starc.
Gavaskar exclaimed and questioned, “Why? Why? Why? That’s an unbelievable shot. That's an irresponsible shot.”
Rohit was playing very well and looking in complete commands with his batting and all-round shots but his poor short selection surprised Gavaskar.
Rohit got out at an individual score of 44 from 74 balls. He hit six fours. India’s score was 60 for the loss of one when he departed.
Gavaskar said that when there was a fielder at long on and a fielder there at square leg, why he had played that shot considering the risk of getting out.
“You've just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier, why would you play that shot? You're a senior player, there's no excuse, absolutely no excuse for this shot,” Gavaskar said.
Other former cricketers also took to their Twitter handle and reacted.
Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said, “Considering the experience missing in the team, that shot from an experienced Rohit Sharma was inexcusable.”
Cricketer commentator Harsha Bhogle said, “Big moment in the game. Rohit had started looking ominous for Australia.”
Australia scored 369 runs in their first inning and in response, India scored 62 for 2 on the second day of the match.
