While Chennai experienced heavy rains overnight, the capital of Tamil Nadu recorded 21 centimeters of rain until 8:30 a.m. This morning flooded several lower-lying areas of the city; the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy rainfall this morning. Environmental journalist Sangeetha Rajeesh, who lives in Puzhithivakkam near Madipakkam in southern Chennai, talked about water leaking into her residential complex.
"There is a meter of water in the parking lot itself. Three nearby construction sites have blocked the rainwater and the rains are pouring into the houses," he said, explaining the situation. In Chennai's KK Nagar, residents had to wade through the water up to their knees.
"KK Nagar interiors are severely affected by stagnation up to the mid-leg level at all intersections, which adds to the unfinished sewer / metro aqueduct in the area making travel difficult and dangerous." Dr Raghavan said he dropped off his father at the airport this morning. In Anna Nagar, several areas remain flooded.
