West Bengal: Dr. Baidyanath Chakraborty, one of India's eminent physicians and pioneers in IVF research, breathed his last on Friday after a prolonged illness.
West Bengal: Dr. Baidyanath Chakraborty, one of India's eminent physicians and pioneers in IVF research, breathed his last on Friday after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last in a hospital. He was 94 years old. The hospital said that he was undergoing treatment at a Salt Lake hospital since March after suffering a heart attack. He also had pneumonia. Condoling his death, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the medical and research world has suffered an irreparable loss.
A hospital official said he had several ailments, mostly age-related. He breathed his last in the morning. Dr. Chakraborty established the 'Institute of Reproductive Medicine (IRM) in 1986 for artificial insemination research. He handed it over to ICMR in 2019. His body was brought to his residence in the afternoon. From there the body was taken to his old clinic on CIT Road, where people would be able to bid him a final farewell.
Dr. Chakraborty was a pioneer in the field of IVF or artificial insemination research and treatment in India. The Institute of Reproductive Medicine, established by experienced medical practitioners, has helped innumerable childless couples get children. The state government gave him the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in 2019.
