New Delhi: The Delhi government is soon going to set up the School of Specialised Excellence for Sports along with Delhi Sports University.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "The Delhi Government is committed to promoting sports in Delhi at every level. The idea is to recognize young talent in sports and continuously support them throughout their sporting journey. Admissions to this school will start from the next academic session.”
According to Sisodia, “The hurdle before us is that in our schools, sports are not given the same weightage as studies. Players who bring medals for India get showered with rewards and financial assistance but Delhi Government is providing support to players who are in their phase of struggle. By assisting the players during the course of their training the Delhi Government is helping them win medals."
The Delhi Government has launched a scheme at three levels to help sportspersons who are performing well in sports. At the first level, sportspersons up to the age of 14 years will be given financial assistance up to Rs. 2 lakhs. At the second level, sportspersons up till the age of 17 years will be given financial assistance up to Rs. 3 lakhs and players above the age of 17 years will be given assistance up to Rs. 16 lakhs. "This is being done so that the players can get the best training. Mission Excellence aims to help sportspersons win medals by helping them during their training,” he said.
On this occasion, Ravi Dahiya said that the Delhi Government had started to support him since his training days even before he was chosen for the Olympics. He promised that with the government’s constant support he will bring a gold medal for India in the next Olympics. Through Delhi Government’s Mission Excellence, Ravi Dahiya got a lot of help in his training that proved beneficial for his performance. He said that during the pandemic when everything was closed Delhi Government’s support helped him carry on with the specialized training that eventually made him win a silver medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics.
