DCW Chief calls Twitter officials and police over child porn on site

On Tuesday, September 20, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued sumonses to Twitter and the Metropolitan Police over the availability of child pornography videos on the microblogging site. Twitter and the Delhi Police have until September 26 to respond to the summonses.

"The incident at Chandigarh University got me thinking and I asked my team to investigate. We found videos of underage girls being raped on Twitter. 30 rupees.This is awful," DCW boss Swati Maliwal told reporters. She said she asked Twitter how such videos exist on the site and what their policies are on reviewing such content.

The Commission has summoned Twitter officials to investigate the steps the site is taking to prevent such content and the systems in place to promptly report such content to law enforcement authorities. DCW has also asked the platform to provide reasons why the tweets were not removed or reported by it.” The Commission has also requested data on the number of such tweets currently available on Twitter. She also searched the number of tweets representing child pornography and rape cases identified, removed and reported by Twitter over the past four years,” according to the panel. DCW also asked Twitter about the standard operating procedure (SOP) followed by the platform regarding the removal and reporting of such content. An attempt was made to determine whether Twitter uses artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to automatically identify and remove tweets depicting abuse of women and children.
