Less than a week after getting information about this, major countries around the world have banned flights coming from African countries with immediate effect.
India has also asked to review its earlier decision to lift the ban on international flights from December 15. Along with this, monitoring of passengers coming from international flights and strict screening and testing of passengers coming from 'risk countries' have been ordered.
As soon as Omicron was announced, all the major countries of the world took the first step in the form of banning flights coming from African countries. Within days of its arrival in South Africa, Omicron has spread to a dozen countries, including Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Britain, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, France and Canada.
Countries that have banned flights to African countries include countries from the European Union, to Canada, the US, the UK, Japan, Brazil, Thailand, Australia, Singapore, Turkey, Egypt, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Sri Lanka and Jordan.
European Union (EU) countries have temporarily banned all travel from South African countries over Omicron. The African countries that the EU has placed in the category of concern include Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe.
