Congress lost the chairmanship of several parliamentary committees, BJP allies got 6 major panels
Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav has been replaced as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare. The panel of food committees will be headed by BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and the parliamentary committee on health will be headed by his party colleague Vivek Thakur.
There have been extensive reshuffles in the Parliamentary Committees of Parliament. In the latest reshuffle announced on Tuesday, opposition parties have not been given the chairmanship of any of the four key parliamentary panels, including the Home Affairs and Information Technology Committee. Along with this, the BJP and its allies chair the six major parliamentary committees Home, IT, Defence, External Affairs, Finance and Health. The BJP has called it a routine change. Opposition parties termed it discriminatory.
BJP MP and retired Uttar Pradesh IPS officer Brij Lal has been made the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs in place of Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, who is contesting for the post of Congress President, has been replaced by Shiv Sena MP Prataprao Jadhav of Shinde faction as the head of the Parliamentary Panel on Information Technology.
Earlier the Trinamool Congress had the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Panel on Food and Consumer Affairs. After the reshuffle, the TMC has not been given the chairmanship of any parliamentary committee. TMC leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien said TMC is the third largest party in Parliament. The second largest opposition party has not got a single president. The largest opposition party has lost two important chairpersons of the standing committees. This is the bitter reality of New India.
