Bihar will have prepaid electricity metres for by 2025
The state government on Monday gave the green light to two electricity distribution companies to take advantage of financial assistance of 3,330 crore to complete the project estimated at 11,100 crore. The Center will provide around 15% of the cost of the project.
About 17.5 million Bihar electricity meters will be converted to smart and prepaid meters by 2025. The meters will not require manual reading for billing, bill distribution, tax collection and disconnection in the event non-payment of contributions.

Arwal and Kanti were chosen as pilot districts for the installation of smart, paid metres in Feb 2020. Patna, Samastipur and Motihari were chosen as a part of its mass rollout in January this year.
“Bihar is the first state in Bharat to conceptualise, style and operationalise good, paid metres, that we've got been performing on since 2019. alternative states are working on smart metres in post-free mode,” same Sanjiwan Sinha, managing director, South province Power Distribution Company limited company.
