Attack on 2 Sikh youths in New York: Beaten with stick, turban forcibly removed
Second such incident within 10 days, the Sikh leader said – Hate crime increased in America.
A video of two Sikh youths being attacked has surfaced near Richmond Hill in New York and has surfaced across social media and caused tremendous backlash. According to the police, one person has been arrested in this case. The case is being investigated by registering a case against the accused under hate crime. Reportedly, a Sikh youth was attacked at the same place 10 days ago as well.
According to local media reports, some people thrashed Sikh youths walking on the road with sticks and then took off their turbans. By the time police personnel reached the spot after the incident, the accused fled. Local leaders associated with the Sikh organization also reached the spot and raised slogans against the police.
New York Attorney General Letitia James condemned the incident in a tweet. He took over his Twitter handle and mentioned that the police are taking action against the criminals. If common people have any information, then they should most certainly come ahead and share it with the police. The culprits will not be spared at all. The Indian Embassy has demanded the New York Police and the local authority take action against the culprits of the incident.
Jennifer Rajkumar, the first Sikh woman member of the New York Assembly, tweeted that this is an alarming situation. Cases of hate crimes against the Sikh community are increasing in America. She said that such an incident happened 10 days back in the Richmond Hill area itself, yet the police did not get alert.
