ASEAN- India Summit: Land Reclamation in the South China Sea, Violence in Myanmar
The leaders reiterated support for the importance of maintaining and promoting peace, security, safety, freedom of navigation in and overflight above the South China Sea.
On Thursday, escalating tensions in the South China Sea, which includes land reclamation activities, as well as the spiraling violence in Myanmar which were discussed during the annual summit of India and ASEAN. The two sides released a joint statement on the Indo-Pacific after the virtual summit on Cooperation with ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific for Peace, Stability, and prosperity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in India’s Act East Policy and the country’s vision for the wider Indo-Pacific region. He declared that 2022 would be celebrated as the ASEAN-India Friendship Year to mark 30 years of their partnership.
